Writing code has never been faster. Point an AI assistant at a feature and it will hand you working code in minutes — code that would have taken a developer days a few years ago. That part of the job is genuinely, permanently faster now.
It’s also not the part that was ever the bottleneck.
Speed doesn’t fix a technology problem. It amplifies whatever decision you made right before you started building. If the decision was right, you get value faster. If it was wrong, you get the wrong thing faster — fully built, fully integrated, and much more expensive to unwind than it would have been to walk away from at the whiteboard stage.
That’s the shift worth paying attention to. The scarce skill was never typing speed. It was the judgment to take a business problem and turn it into the right technical bet: what to build, what to deliberately not build, and in what order. That skill hasn’t gotten cheaper. If anything, it matters more now, because bad calls compound faster than they used to.
Most companies in the $5M–$100M range don’t have that judgment sitting on staff, and they usually can’t justify hiring it full-time. It’s not a headcount problem — it’s an availability problem. You need someone who has made this call before, has no codebase of their own to defend, and will tell you when the answer is “don’t build it” instead of finding a way to say yes. That’s a different job than the one most in-house engineering hires are built for, and it’s the whole premise behind working with a fractional CTO: the judgment on tap, without the overhead of owning it outright.
If your team can already ship faster than you can decide what’s worth shipping, that gap is the actual problem. That’s a conversation worth having.
